A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for the students, professors, and teaching assistants. MOOCs are a recent development in distance education.
Catholic Education Online (“CEO”) is a Catholic MOOC (or “MOOCC”), sponsored by the Adler-Aquinas Institute. Unlike secular MOOCs, CEO has for its focus providing free courses that have specifically Catholic identity and content, and qualify as being a part of liberal education and the type of specializations that commonly flow from a liberal education, such as theology, philosophy, literature, history and political science.
That said, our eventual goal is to offer courses in all areas, including the natural sciences, provided their content is not inconsistent with the truth. We are fortunate in that – unlike secular MOOCs – we have access to a sure guide in many areas of faith and morals that assures freedom from error: the Magisterium or teaching authority of the Catholic Church.
Fellows of the Adler-Aquinas Institute are preparing articles and courses for this Catholic Education Online MOOCC. These will begin to be posted when completed. Stay tuned!
